The Room Nobody Was Allowed to Enter

There was a room at the end of the upstairs hallway.

The family never used it.

They never explained why.

They simply told their children not to open the door.

For years, nobody questioned the rule.

Until one night, someone heard knocking from inside.

The Door

The room was small.

It had one window facing the backyard and a wooden door with an old brass handle.

There was nothing unusual about it.

No lock.

No warning.

Nothing written on the door.

But every member of the family knew the rule.

Never enter.

When guests asked about the room, the family changed the subject.

The Sound

The first person to hear something was the youngest daughter.

She was eight years old.

She woke sometime after midnight and heard three knocks.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

The sound came from upstairs.

She assumed someone else was awake.

Then she heard her mother's voice.

"Go back to bed."

The girl did.

The next morning, her mother denied speaking to her.

The Second Night

The knocking happened again.

Three times.

This time, the girl's older brother heard it too.

They stood together at the bottom of the stairs.

Neither wanted to go up.

Then something knocked again.

From inside the room.

The brother whispered that they should leave it alone.

They went downstairs.

The Photograph

Years later, the family moved out.

During the final cleanup, an old photograph was discovered behind a cabinet.

It showed the house decades earlier.

The room at the end of the hallway was visible in the background.

The door was open.

Someone was standing inside.

Nobody in the family recognized the person.

The Empty Room

The photograph was eventually lost.

The house changed owners.

The room was painted.

The floor was replaced.

The door remained.

According to one later occupant, the room was always colder than the rest of the house.

He eventually stopped using it.

He said he never understood why.

He simply didn't like standing inside.

The Rule

The family never gave a reason for their rule.

Perhaps there was one.

Perhaps there wasn't.

But people who lived in the house afterward reported hearing the same thing.

Three knocks.

Always three.

And always from inside the room.

Some rules survive because nobody remembers who made them.
